Quick Recap:
In this BNI Tech Talk, Jeremy continued the Member Traffic Lights Deep Dive series with a focus on 1-to-1 meetings and how they influence a member’s score, relationships, and referral success. The session explained what makes a meaningful 1-to-1, reviewed the GAINS Exchange, demonstrated where members can complete and review GAINS information in BNI Connect and the mobile app, and shared a practical strategy for scheduling two purposeful 1-to-1s each week. Jeremy also covered how 1-to-1 activity is recorded, calculated over the previous completed six months, and verified using the Summary PALMS Report.
BNI Tech Talk: One to Ones
In this installment of the Member Traffic Lights Deep Dive series, Jeremy focused on 1-to-1 meetings, one of the most important relationship-building activities in BNI. He explained that Member Traffic Lights is not simply a scoring system; it is designed to guide members toward the consistent behaviors that help them build credibility, strengthen relationships, and receive more value from their membership.
The session began with a pop quiz covering three foundational concepts. Members learned that an average of at least one 1-to-1 per week is required to earn the maximum 20 points for this metric. Jeremy also reviewed the meaning of GAINS—Goals, Accomplishments, Interests, Networks, and Skills—and clarified that either participant may submit the 1-to-1 activity, provided it is submitted only once. When one person records the meeting, both participants receive credit. For cross-chapter 1-to-1s, both chapters must submit their PALMS reports before the activity is fully credited.
Jeremy also clarified what does and does not qualify as a 1-to-1. A group or power-team meeting is valuable, but it is not reported as a 1-to-1 because the activity is intended to represent a focused meeting between two people. He cautioned against recording brief, casual conversations simply to receive credit, noting that a meaningful 1-to-1 should provide genuine relationship-building value.
The webinar then explored the characteristics of an effective 1-to-1. Jeremy described strong meetings as focused, intentional, built around a GAINS Exchange, and strategic. Members were encouraged to prepare in advance, reduce distractions, ask meaningful questions, listen actively, cover the topics that matter most, and conclude with clear next steps. He emphasized that early meetings may focus on getting acquainted, while repeated meetings can become increasingly strategic and centered on introductions, clients, opportunities, and ways to help one another.
A major portion of the session focused on the GAINS Exchange. Jeremy demonstrated where members can enter and update their Goals, Accomplishments, Interests, Networks, and Skills in both BNI Connect and the mobile app. He encouraged members to provide meaningful detail because every item can become a conversation starter or reveal a shared interest, connection, or opportunity. Accomplishments are particularly valuable because they help communicate credibility and give partners a natural reason to ask about achievements that members may not otherwise mention themselves.
Jeremy also showed how members can review another person’s GAINS information before a meeting. By opening the partner’s profile in the mobile app, a member can quickly review the GAINS, TOPS, and weekly presentation sections while preparing for the conversation. He recommended checking privacy settings to ensure the bio is visible to other members, particularly when conducting cross-chapter 1-to-1s. Members may also use the Member Details Report to view, export, or share GAINS information.
The session included an advanced strategy for members who want to go beyond the minimum scoring requirement. Jeremy recommended completing two 1-to-1s each week by dividing the chapter into two groups. The first group is the member’s contact sphere or power team—people in complementary or cooperative professions who can naturally refer business to one another. The second group includes everyone else in the chapter. By meeting with one person from each group every week, members can develop deep relationships within their closest referral network while continuing to build connections throughout the entire chapter.
Jeremy stressed that the goal is not to meet with each person only once. Repeated 1-to-1s create greater depth, trust, knowledge, and referral confidence. Members will naturally rotate through their smaller contact-sphere group more frequently, while still maintaining relationships with the broader chapter. Over time, a member from the larger group may become part of the smaller strategic circle as the relationship develops.
The final training section explained how the 1-to-1 metric is scored and verified. The score is based on the member’s average number of recorded 1-to-1s per countable week during the previous completed six-month period. Countable weeks are calculated using Present, Absent, Late, and Substitute values from PALMS, while Managed weeks are excluded. Members earning an average of one or more 1-to-1s per week receive the maximum 20 points, with lower averages receiving proportionally fewer points.
To verify a score, Jeremy demonstrated how to open the Summary PALMS Report, locate the member’s total 1-to-1 activity, calculate the number of countable weeks, and divide the activity total by those weeks. This allows members and leaders to compare the calculated weekly average with the score shown in Member Traffic Lights.
The webinar concluded with a live Q&A covering cross-chapter meetings, group meetings, privacy settings, contact spheres, late activity entry, Traffic Lights availability, report access, BNI Academy, and related BNI Connect features. Throughout the session, the central message remained clear: consistent, purposeful 1-to-1s are not merely a way to earn points—they are one of the strongest tools members have for building trust, increasing referability, and creating long-term business opportunities.
