@abundance - great to hear from you!

The original reason for this was to attempt to (at least mentally) enforce the policy that the bare minimum requirement of a referral is that they are willing to take your phone call.  This is in contrast to a lead where there is no permission to be contacted.

Of course, things have changed over the years and now there is email and text and all sorts of other methods of contact, but until now the policy itself hasn't caught up to that.  Once it has, it will be changed in the system.  The best way to address a "policy" issue like this is through your Executive Director and possibly your International Board of Advisors representative in the area, which is a council of MEMBERS ONLY that help to shape policies such as this one.

    Mr Walsh,

I agree with your second paragraph. There are now many ways to establish communication other than a phone call.

In my mind a three way email is a superior way to ensure that all parties to the conversation are aware of the purpose of the connection.

    Mr Jeremy Walsh,

After I posted the above response I heard the webinar in which you described “given your card” as “they are going to call you” and “told them you would call” as “they are expecting your call”.

That is a pretty reasonable interpretation. Two options:

1- Contact them as soon as practicable.

2- Don’t contact them, but they have your information and you can expect them to contact you.

The means of contact is secondary. The point is to identify who should initiate contact.

Please make phone number optional on the referral form. Our entire chapter just puts zeros in for phone number. Rarely would we know the phone number of the referral. If we know it we would enter it but requiring it is silly.
