    Giving a business card ISN’T the referral.

    The conversation you had with the one who needs the service is the referral. At the end of that conversation you leave the person with a touch card (business card, brochure, phone number, email, website, ...) which gives them a path forward if they should choose to proceed.

    THEN you provide a referral slip to your BNI partner (either through the app or website, or hard copy at the next regular meeting). This mechanism allows the service provider to take the initiative to engage the prospect rather than passively waiting for them to call.
